Sağlık Yönetiminde Sürdürülebilirlik: Sağlık Çalışanları Arasında Sürdürülebilirlik ve Atık Yönetimi Algısı Üzerine Bir Araştırma

Year 2024, Volume: 6 Issue: 1, 63 - 73, 06.06.2024

Abstract

Sustainability in Health Management: A Research on the Perception of Sustainability and Waste Management Among Health Workers

Year 2024, Volume: 6 Issue: 1, 63 - 73, 06.06.2024

Abstract

Background: The healthcare sector faces unique challenges in sustainability, particularly in waste management and environmental impact. Health workers play a crucial role in implementing sustainable practices within healthcare facilities. This study investigates the perceptions of health workers towards sustainability and waste management in health management.
Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed, comprising a survey distributed to 200 health workers across various healthcare institutions, followed by in-depth interviews with 50 participants. The survey assessed awareness, attitudes, and practices regarding sustainability and waste management. Interviews explored personal perceptions and experiences in more depth.
Results: The survey revealed that while a majority of health workers are aware of sustainability concepts, there is a significant gap in the application of sustainable practices, especially in waste management. Many participants expressed a willingness to engage in more sustainable practices but reported a lack of adequate training and institutional support. The interviews highlighted that personal motivation often compensates for the institutional shortcomings, but systematic changes are necessary for meaningful impact.
Discussion: The findings underscore the need for comprehensive sustainability training for health workers, integrated into their regular professional development. Institutions should implement policies that encourage and facilitate sustainable practices, particularly in waste management. The study also highlights the importance of creating a culture of sustainability within healthcare facilities.
Conclusion: Health workers are generally aware and supportive of sustainability in healthcare. However, there is a need for improved training, policies, and institutional support to bridge the gap between awareness and practice, particularly in waste management. Sustainable healthcare management can significantly contribute to global environmental goals, but it requires concerted efforts at both individual and institutional levels.
