Abstract

Aim: This study aims to investigate the relationship between hedonic hunger and food intake among university students.
Material and Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted with voluntary participants enrolled in the faculty of health sciences of a foundation university between February and May 2022. The sample size was determined as 197 individuals using G*Power 3.1.9.7 software, with an effect size of 0.25, an error rate of 0.05, and a 95% power. A total of 199 students who agreed to participate formed the study's sample. Participants' demographic information and eating habits were collected through a general information form, while hedonic hunger status was assessed online using the power of food scale (PFS). Eating habits were correlated with PFS scores.
Results: In comparison to the female gender, the BMI score was found to be higher in the male gender (p<0.05). Additionally, within the BMI classification, participants categorized as mildly obese exhibited a higher BMI score (p<0.05). Participants who made food choices had significantly lower levels of PFS in terms of food accessibility, food availability, and tasting food compared to non-choosers (p <0.05).
Conclusion: The presence of particularly palatable foods in an obesogenic environment suggests that hedonic hunger may contribute to obesity. Gender differences in hedonic hunger, as well as correlations between BMI and WHR scores, have been observed. Furthermore, dietary habits have been found to be closely associated with gender, BMI, and the WHR scores used in the measurement of hedonic hunger. Identifying these habits can be utilized as a therapeutic strategy in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases associated with dietary habits, such as obesity.
