Objective: In this descriptive study, it was aimed to draw attention to the verbal and physical violence of health workers in the workplace and the effectiveness of white code implementation.
Materials and Methods: The study was conducted retrospectively on 145 white code forms that were notified to the Employee Rights and Safety Unit of Training and Research Hospital between 1 January and 31 December 2018. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were applied on the collected data.
Results: As a result of the research, it was found that 145 white code notifications were made in 2018 and occurred at a maximum rate of 15.2% in December. White code notifications were mostly made from polyclinics (48.3%) and emergency services (29.7%) and 62.1% of the violent incidents occurred during working hours. It was found that 60.7% of the violence against health workers was applied by the patients, 69.7% (101) of them were physicians and 22.8% (33) were nurses. Among the causes of violence; It was found that the wrong attitudes and behaviors of the patients and their relatives were in the first place and the unwillingness of the patients to wait for the examination and examination was in the second place. It was found that the mean age of the health workers exposed to violence was 39.5±10.5 years, while the mean age of the perpetrators was 40.2±10.8 years and the highest rate was applied by men. In these violent incidents, the majority of health workers did not exercise their right to withdraw from legal aid.
Conclusion: The results of this study show that violence against health workers is an important problem and that it will contribute to awareness raising by emphasizing the importance of violence in health with the example of a public hospital.
