X-XI.
yüzyıllarda yaşamış olan Süryani yazar ve Nusaybin Metropoliti İliyâ bar
Şînayâ’nın (d.975-ö.1046)
Kᵊtobo
dᵊ-Targᵊmono (Kitâbu’t-Tercümân fî Taᶜlîmi’l-Luğati’s-Süryân)
adlı leksikolojik eseri, Süryanca ve Arapça olarak kaleme alınan
konulu-kavramsal nitelikte dönemi için alanında tek ve ilk çalışma olması
açısından önem arzetmektedir. Özellikle, Grekçe Mantık, Felsefe, Astronomi ve Dilbilim
çalışmalarının Süryanca üzerinden Arapçalaştırılarak kazandırılmasında önemli
bir rolü olan Süryanî mütercimlerin bu aktarım esnasında ürettikleri kavramlar
ve gösterdikleri çabaların bir kısmını bu eser üzerinden incelemek, Türkiye’de
bakir bir alan olan Süryanca Sözlükbilimi araştırmaları için ilkeseldir. Arap
dilbilimci Sibeveyh’le başlayan Arapça gramerine dair çalışmalar ve ardından
üretilen muᶜcemler, bu anlamda tek başlarına Arapça sözlükbilimsel
terminolojiyi anlamaya kâfî gelmemektedir. Bu yönüyle, tarihsel süreç
içerisinde hem Süryanca Sözlükbilimi hem de Arapça Sözlükbilimi geleneklerini,
tarihsel gelişim süreçleri içerisinde her ikisini karşılaştırmalı olarak anlama
gayreti, sözkonusu alan için daha bilimsel bir zemini hazırlayacak türdendir.
Genelde dilbilimsel araştırmalarda Süryani dilbilimcilerin yeterince bilinmiyor
olması ve özelde de leksikografik eserler bağlamında yeteri kadar bu alanda
çalışmanın yapılmamış olması, İliya’nın
Kᵊtobo dᵊ-Targᵊmono adlı konulu-kavramsal-didaktik leksikografik eserini
çalışmaya değer kılmıştır. İliya, eserinin mukaddimesinde sebeb-i teᵓlîf
sâdedinde; Mezopotamya bölgesinde yaşayan Arapça ve Süryanca konuşan
Süryaniler’e Süryanca öğretmek amacıyla hem gramer hem de sözlükbilimsel
çalışmalara vurgu yaparak eserini kaleme aldığını ifade etmektedir. Bu
araştırma da, müellifin sözkonusu amacını günümüz sözlükbilimsel çalışmalar
çerçevesinde ele almayı hedeflemektedir.
