Introduction: Nurses aware of their own emotions and empathize are expected to exhibit positive attitudes and behaviors towards older individuals to communicate effectively.
Aim: This research aimed to examine the relationship between nurses' attitudes towards elderly patients and emotional intelligence.
Method: This descriptive-correctional study was carried out in a state hospital. The sample consisted of 350 nurses currently working and agreeing to fill in the questionnaires. The data was collected through Nurse Information Survey, Kogan's Attitude towards Old People Scale, and Emotional Intelligence Evaluation Scale.
Results: The average age of the nurses was 29.95 ± 8.12 years. The sample (72%) were women, and 82.9% were not living with the older people. Nurses (51.1%) did not care for older patients, and 65.1% were unwilling to serve this population. The Kogan's Attitude towards Old People Scale score was 121.30 ± 8.36. The Emotional Intelligence Evaluation Scale score was 135.18 ± 21.52. The research did not find any statistically significant relationship between the scores (p > 0.05). Analyses did not reveal significant differences between scores of Kogan's Attitude towards Old People Scale regarding some characteristics (p > 0.05). Nurses who are married and not living with the elderly and with 16-20 years of experience obtained higher scores from Emotional Intelligence Evaluation Scale (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: The nurses' attitudes and emotional intelligence were positive and at a moderate level. There was no significant relationship between the scores. Developing methods and service training programs may improve nurses’ emotional intelligence and attitudes towards the elderly.
