The Hawthorne Factories District as Heterotopia: A Historical, Functional, and Futuristic Analysis

The Hawthorne factory district exemplifies the characteristics of an ‘industrial city,’ distinguishing itself from other cities of its time by emerging as a heterotopia-a space ‘linked to other places’ yet lacking a traditional historical settlement. Heterotopia represents an illusion between “exclusion and inclusion,” existing as a distinct space apart from fixed, hierarchical places. Viewed through historical epistemology and postmodern theories, it carries deep meanings from anthropological and sociological perspectives. In the literature, the Hawthorne factory district is rarely considered a heterotopia, and its broader impact remains unexplored. It is primarily known for the “Hawthorne Studies” within neoclassical management. However, as a heterotopia, the Hawthorne district plays a central role in modern industrial history-economically, politically, socially, and culturally. This article seeks to frame the district as a heterotopia, exploring not only its historical significance but also its philosophical, sociological, and futuristic dimensions through historical epistemology, critical sociology, and administrative anthropology. Using the interdisciplinary approach of the French Annales School, the article analyzes the district in relation to urbanization, American history, and capitalism. It discusses the political, social, economic, and cultural effects of the Hawthorne district, the symbolic city of industrial production, on people, structures, and the future.

Bir Heterotopya olarak Hawthorne Fabrikaları Bölgesi: Tarihsel, İşlevsel ve Füturistik Bir Analiz

Öz

Hawthorne fabrikaları bölgesi “endüstriyel kent” niteliği taşır. Bu yönüyle, Hawthorne fabrikaları bölgesi döneminde diğer kentlerden ayrışır, tarihsel yerleşik olmayan “başka mekanlara dair” bir heterotopya şeklinde karşımıza çıkar. Heterotopya sabit ve hiyerarşik mekânlardan, yerlerden ve coğrafyalardan ayrı bir alan olarak “dışlama ve kapsama” arasında bir yanılsamayı ifade eder. Ziyadesiyle, tarihsel epistemoloji ve postmodern teoriler bağlamında değerlendirilir, antropolojik ve sosyolojik bakış açısıyla derin anlamlar içerir. Yazında Hawthorne fabrikaları bölgesi heterotopya şeklinde ele alınmaz, etkisi ve yansıması tartışılmaz. Çokça, neoklasik yönetim kapsamında “Hawthorne Çalışmaları” olarak adlandırılan bir dizi araştırmalarla ifade edilir. Oysa heterotopya olarak Hawthorne fabrikaları bölgesi ekonomik, siyasi, sosyal ve kültürel olarak modern endüstriyel tarihin merkezinde yer alır. Bu açıdan makale Hawthorne fabrikaları bölgesinin heterotopya olarak tartışılmasını amaçlamaktadır. Dahası, bölgenin sadece tarihsel açısından değil, felsefi, sosyolojik ve füturistik olarak tarihsel epistemoloji, eleştirel sosyoloji ve yönetim antropolojisi açısından nasıl ele alınması gerektiğini açıklamayı hedeflenmektedir. Buna yönelik disiplinlerarası tarih yaklaşımını önemseyen Fransız Annales Okulu çerçevesinde, bölgesinin heterotopik analizi yapılmış, kentleşme tarihi, Amerika tarihi ve kapitalizm tarihi açısından, öne çıkan temalar tespit edilmiş ve yorumlanmıştır. Böylece endüstriyel üretim tarihinin sembol kenti Hawthorne fabrikaları bölgesinin siyasi, sosyal, ekonomik ve kültürel etkilerinin insanlara, yapılara ve süreçlere ve geleceğe yansıması tartışılmıştır.
