Eskişehir’deki Psikiyatrik Hastalarda Folat ve B12 Vitamin Seviyelerinin Değerlendirilmesi

Year 2018, Volume: 3 Issue: 1, 210 - 213, 29.06.2018

Abstract

Evaluation of Folate and B12 Vitamin Levels in Psychiatric Patients in Eskişehir

Year 2018, Volume: 3 Issue: 1, 210 - 213, 29.06.2018

Abstract

Major depressive disorder is sadness, melancholy, or
grief, which has reached a degree of disturbance for one's social functions and
activities of daily living. Drug treatment is inadequate at the situation where
people respond positively to treatment, and is far from the recovery process.
Recent studies have shown evidence that vitamins and minerals in the diet play
an important role in these depressive disorders that occur in humans. The
effects on the central nervous system are the resultant Folate and B12
vitamins. In our study, Folate and vitamin B12 levels of outpatients treated
with Eskişehir Osmangazi University psychiatric department were examined. For
this purpose, 343 patients with vitamin B12 levels and 250 patients with Folate
levels who were referred to a psychiatric service in 2016 were retrospectively
determined. All the data obtained were evaluated statistically by SPSS 21
package program. As a result of the evaluation, the prevalence of folate
deficiency was found to be 15.6% and that of vitamin B12 deficiency was found
to be 15.45%. For our results consistent with the literature, it can be said
that vitamin B12 and folate levels should be routinely monitored during the
diagnosis and treatment of major depressive disorder. Especially, antidepressant
use restriction and relieving symptoms can be interpreted as positive results
with vitamin supplements.
