Aşırı Ağlayan Bebeğe Sahip Hemşire Annelerin Mental İyi Oluşuna Sosyal Destek ve Sosyodemografik Özelliklerin Etkisi

Year 2023, Volume: 3 Issue: 1, 25 - 36, 31.01.2023

Abstract

The Effect of Social Support and Sociodemographic Characteristics on The Mental Well Being of Nurse Mothers with Excessively Crying Babies

Year 2023, Volume: 3 Issue: 1, 25 - 36, 31.01.2023

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of social support and sociodemographic characteristics on mental well-being of nurse mothers who have excessively crying babies. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study is conducted between February and June 2021. The sample for the research comprised of 116 nurse mothers working as a nurse at Akdeniz University Hospital and Antalya Training and Research Hospital, whose 0-18 month old baby cried at least two hours a day or who defined their 0-18 month old baby as "excessive crying baby". In the application and evaluation of the research data, “Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS)”, and “Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support” were used. The data of the research were collected through an online survey, with snowball sampling method.
Results: The mean age of the nurse mothers participating in the study was 30.93±4.10, and their babies were 8.01±4.84 months old. The total WEMWBS score of the nurse mothers was 50.71±9.09. It is found that nurse mothers with excessively crying babies have moderate-high social support and mental well-being. The perceived social support and income status of nurse mothers who have excessively crying babies have a positive and good effect on mental well-being (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Nurse mothers with excessively crying babies mental well-being above moderate. The perceived social support and income status of the participating mothers affect their mental well-being. It is recommended to initiate studies to increase social support and mental well-being of nurse mothers with excessively crying babies. It is thought that increasing the income status of nurse mothers will positively affect their mental well-being.
