UÇ NOKTALAR ARASINDA BİR YOLCULUK: BLACK MIRROR’DA POSTHÜMANİZM TEKNOLOJİLERİNE FELSEFİ BİR BAKIŞ

Abstract

2011 yapımı Black Mirror sadece en çok izlenen değil, aynı zamanda en çok tartışılan bilimkurgu dizileri arasında yer almaktadır. İngiliz Channel 4 kanalında ilk kez yayınlanan ve ilerleyen yıllarda Netflix tarafından satın alınarak dünya çapında popülerliğe kavuşan dizi, teknolojiden, suç ve cezaya, tüketimden ahlak ve özgürlüğe kadar pek çok temayı ayrıntılı biçimde irdelemektedir. Bu temaların arasında ahlak, yapımın odak noktasında bulunmaktadır çünkü pek çok bölümün temel eleştiri kapsamında ahlak ve ahlaki endişeler gösterilmektedir. Bu makale, Black Mirror dizisinde ortaya konan yenilikçi teknolojileri posthümanist bir eksende irdelemekte ve onların ahlaki boyutunu Immanuel Kant’ın ahlak felsefesine dayanarak analiz etmektedir. Bu kapsamda, Kant’ın öne sürdüğü mutlak emir kavramından yararlanılmaktadır. Buna ek olarak, dizide tasvir edilen ölümsüzlük kavramı Descartes ve Hegel gibi felsefeye iz bırakmış düşünürlerin penceresinden incelenmekte ve dizide tasvir edilen ölümsüzlük vizyonları ile karşılaştırmalı bir şekilde ele alınmaktadır. Bu bağlamda makale, Black Mirror dizisinin en çarpıcı bölümleri arasında yer alan “San Junipero”, “Beyaz Noel” ve “Kara Müze” bölümlerini merkeze almaktadır. Bu bölümler ütopik ve distopik olmak üzere posthümanist teknolojilerle harmanlanmış farklı gelecek vizyonları sunmaktadırlar. Böylece söz konusu gelecek vizyonlarının teknolojik veya ekonomik yönlerinin dışında ahlaki boyutlarını gözler önüne sermekte ve bu yönde elde edilen sonuçların ahlaki anlamlarını postmodern bir bağlamda ortaya koymaktadır.

ROAMING BETWEEN EXTREMES: A PHILOSOPHICAL OUTLOOK ON POSTHUMAN TECHNOLOGIES IN BLACK MIRROR

Abstract

The 2011 TV Series Black Mirror is not only among the most watched but also the most debated science fiction productions. The series focuses on several themes from technology to crime and punishment and consumption to morality. Amongst these themes, morality has a central position as morality and moral concerns form the major point of criticism of the production. This article analyzes technologies depicted in Black Mirror from a posthuman scope and their moral aspects from the perspective of Immanuel Kant’s moral philosophy. In this context, the article refers to Kant’s categorical imperative. In addition, the notion of immortality depicted in the series is explored from the viewpoint of influential philosophers such as Descartes and Hegel and addressed comparatively with the visions of immortality depicted in the series. To that end, the article specifically concentrates on the most striking episodes of the series namely, “San Junipero”, “White Christmas” and “Black Museum”. These episodes demonstrate various different utopian and dystopian visions of the future combined with posthuman technologies. Thus, besides their technological and economic facets, the study exposes their moral aspects and puts forward particular findings derived from these results, hence revealing the moral implications behind posthuman visions within a postmodern context.
