Literary works can be used as an instructional tool in education. However, although they are thought to be the main tools in Turkish and literature courses, literary works can be utilized in the teaching of many subject courses. In this sense, the relationship between social studies and literature has been studied for a long time. When the curriculum of the course is examined, it can be presumed that many literary works can be incorporated in teaching social studies. It is argued that travel writings that are a literary genre can be used in teaching various knowledge, skills and values as being the one of the objectives of the course. Therefore, examining the contribution of all literary works in social studies teaching would have significance. In this regard, the study focusing on Gülten Dayıoğlu’s travel writings is expected to contribute to the area of social studies teaching. The primary aim of this study is to examine the travel writings in terms of their efficacy in teaching social studies. The study was conducted using documentary analysis, which is one of the qualitative research methods in screening model. Probability sampling was employed and two experts analyzed Gülten Dayıoğlu’s travel writings on continents. The findings were organized based on the themes identified, described and discussed considering the results of similar studies and presented in the form of prose. In the travel writings, themes including various social sciences, culture that is in the scope of social studies, learning areas, comparisons between countries and continents, comparisons with Turkey, critics of the author, and method of traveling were identified. As a result, it was inferred that travel writings could be used in the teaching of knowledge of values related to social studies. Besides, they could be useful in teaching skills like critical thinking along with empathy, questioning, identifying problems and producing solutions. However, in the discussion section, the importance of supervision and justification by field experts was emphasized in terms of delivering the knowledge related to social studies correctly. In addition to this, it was pointed out that the date of the travel should also be indicated as well as the place. Eğitimin çeşitli basamak ve derslerinde edebi eserler, öğretim aracı olarak kullanılabilmektedir. Sosyal bilgiler edebiyat ilişkisi güncel olmakla birlikte, alanyazında çok eskiden beri yer almaktadır. Bu anlamda, Gülten Dayıoğlu’nun gezi yazıları örneğinde yapılan araştırmanın sosyal bilgiler öğretimine katkı getirmesi beklenmektedir. Araştırmanın temel amacı gezi yazılarını, sosyal bilgiler öğretiminde işlevselliği açısından değerlendirmektir. Tarama modelinde nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman analizi tekniğiyle gerçekleştirilen araştırmada, Dayıoğlu’nun kıtalara ilişkin gezi yazıları iki uzman tarafından incelenmiştir. Sonuçta gezi yazılarının sosyal bilgiler konu alanına ilişkin bilgi ve değerlerin öğretiminde kullanılabileceği anlaşılmıştır. Ancak tartışma kısmında sosyal bilgiler alanına ilişkin doğru bilgilerin aktarılması açısından yazıların alan uzmanlarınca denetlenme ve doğrulanmasının önemine vurgu yapılmıştır.
