Abstract

Abstract

Challenging experiences are an inevitable part of life, and they can have a significant impact on society, causing collective trauma. After the earthquake disaster in Turkey on February 6, 2023, mental health workers provided psychological first aid and psychosocial support services in the field. Mental health workers are particularly vulnerable to experiencing secondary traumatic stress as a result of their work. Increasing the psychological resilience of mental health workers will prevent the risk of experiencing secondary traumatic stress. This study aims to investigate the effect of psychoeducation program on the secondary traumatic stress levels and psychological resilience of mental health workers who provided assistance in the field after the earthquake disaster. A one-group pretest-posttest experimental design was used in the study with 11 participants (two psychologists, and nine psychological counselors). The psychoeducation program prepared in the study was implemented one day a week for eight weeks. Demographic Information Form, Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, and Brief Psychological Resilience Scale were used as data collection tools. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that the psychoeducation program was significantly and highly effective in reducing the participants' secondary traumatic stress levels and increasing their psychological resilience. Consequently, it can be stated that group interventions for mental health workers at high risk of experiencing secondary traumatic stress can function as a protective and supportive mechanism. In addition, interventions that increase the psychological resilience of mental health workers may reduce the risk of these individuals experiencing secondary traumatic stress.
