Abstract
This study aims to reveal whether there is a relation between the generations which play an important role in the formation of identity and the preferred music genres which stand out in the demonstration of identity. In this context, in the literature part of the study, the concepts of identity and generations, and then popular culture and popular music were mentioned. In the analysis part of the study, the information about favourite songs, singers and music genres of 300 people in the Baby Boomers generation and Generation Z were collected by using Google Forms with open-ended survey questions. The data obtained from the survey were analysed by using the causal-comparative model from the quantitative-relational screening models, content analysis method and Python, in order to reveal whether the preferred songs coincide with the general characteristics of the generations, and what similarities and differences exist between the two generations. The findings reveal that the generations have an effect on people’s music preferences.
