A Healthy Male Child: The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

Abstract

In his novel of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and his note for the final edition of the novel, Victor Hugo offers interrelated classifications for the books and readers. According to this, books have sexes: male ones are healthy, complete, good and enduring. The readers of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame are also classified by sex: on the one hand there are female readers who are interested only in the plot, on the other hand there are “other” readers who seek for the aesthetic and philosophical thinking and the historical system “beneath” the novel. This article examines the “historical system” which is the criterion in Hugo’s classification of readers, and points out the connection of this system with the popular conception of history of that era. And contrary to Hugo’s opinion, it argues that the merit of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame lies not in the thoughts “beneath” the novel but in the plot which is attached to the women readers. Finally, the article suggests that Hugo’s sex-based book and reader classifications are the reaction to a certain consideration of his era which regards the novel as a female genre.

Sıhhatli Bir Erkek Evlat: Notre-Dame’ın Kamburu

Abstract

Victor Hugo Notre-Dame’ın Kamburu’nda ve romanın nihai edisyonu için yazdığı notta, birbiriyle ilintili kitap ve okur tasnifleri sunar. Buna göre, kitaplar cinsiyetlidir: Erkek doğanlar sağlıklıdır, tamdır, iyidir, kalıcıdır. Notre-Dame’ın Kamburu’nun okurları da cinsiyete göre tasnif edilir: Bir yanda sadece olay örgüsüyle ilgilenen kadın okurlar vardır; diğer yanda da romanın “altında” yatan estetik ve felsefe düşüncesini, tarih sistemini arayan “başka” okurlar.
Bu çalışmada Hugo’nun okur tasnifinde kriter olan “tarih sistemi” incelenmekte, bu sistemin dönemin popüler tarih kurgusuyla bağlantısı gösterilmektedir. Hugo’nun kanaatinin tersine, Notre-Dame’ın Kamburu’nun erdeminin, romanın “altında yatan” düşüncelerde değil, kadınların payı addedilen olay örgüsünde bulunduğu savunulmaktadır. Hugo’nun cinsiyet temelli okur-kitap tasnifinin de, o dönemde romanın dişil bir tür sayılması karşısında verilen bir tepki olduğu iddia edilmektedir.
