Erzurum, which is on the entrance of a significant junction, is a region
which migrations coming from Middle Asia, Asia Minor and Causasus have
visited since Ancient times. Especially, voyages and migrations which were organised
towards to West by various Turkish clans were centered on Anatolia.
Our region is a district which many significant rivers, which give life to major
part of Anatolia district, spring from. One of the most significant of these rivers
is undoubtedly Çoruh river. Tortum Brook, which is one of the important
branches of Çoruh river, is very significant for the history of the region. In this
regard, Tortum Brook Basin (Tortum, Uzundere), which form our field of study,
has been a transit point of many societies in prehistoric and ancient times.
Tortum Brook and its basin are very significant for the states being established
in the region. Ksenopton, one of the ancient time writers, showed this
region in the borders of Taokhs Country. As a result of surface researches handled
under the presidency of A. Ceylan, it was found out that Tortum Brook
Basin has had residency since chalcolithic period and after B.C. 2000 Hayasa
Kingdom, Dayaeni/Diauehi and Urartian Kingdom dominated the region. In
this study, historical geography of Tortum Brook Basin which has preserved its
importance in terms of transit point it has, will be studied.
