Having been founded on 3 June, 1933, Sümerbank undertook the mission of realizing the investments designated with the First Five Year Plan according to the principle of statism of the Turkish Republic. This plan which contained the principal needs of Turkey attached special importance to the weaving industry. The factories which were referred to as “complex”s, acquired an important place in the infrastructure of the country’s industry. These factories played an important role in solving serious problems like permanent employment and labour turnover, which had direct impact on the country’s industry. In this context, in order to satisfy the basic needs of the workers and to ensure the workers’ attachment to their work, a social infrastructure was built and social practices which included facilities such as kindergartens and schools; nutrition and clothing were put to use within the premises of the factories. These facilities provided by the factories securing the basic needs of the employees acquired great significance especially under the dire conditions of the Second World War. This policy not only ensured the employees’ long term attachment to their workplace but also provided positive models of worker welfare. Thus, these factories were not only economic and commercial businesses but they also became social institutions which made it possible for the employees and the local people to socialize
