Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar Mahur Beste Doğu Tasavvuf Bildungsroman
Researchers have brought various perspectives on Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar; starting from his conspiracy of silence until the lucky turn of his literary fate who eventaully reached a well deserved fame. Till now, some research has been carried on Tanpınar’s Western opinions, impressions or images, but little has been written about his Eastern thoughts, symbols and the time where he spent his life in the Eastern culture. He is like a compass that gracefully lands on its two legs; one being the East and the other the West. Since Tanpınar adopted the multivocal contrepoint method in his life style and in his writing, he makes the seemingly contrasting concepts and lives in his fiction credible in a harmonious way. This article aims to examine Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s novel Mahur Beste, its Eastern influence, his narrative that hinges on a mystic note and its relationship it sets with the sufi culture. The characters of Behçet Bey, Sabri Hodja and Nuri Bey come forward as names whose evolution can be seen in the novel. The author prefers to demonstrate the difference clearly between them by creating protagonist characters to antagonist characters. The order can be ranked starting from the bottom as melancholy, taking a step forward and finally going over the threshold. These can be categorized like this; Mr. Behçet is a pathological melancholic type, Sabri Hodja is the type who takes a step but cannot go further, and Nuri Bey is the one who goes over the threshold and reaches transcendence. It’s not just the viewing of the characters, but also one can see the support the sufi terminology and the symbols spread all over gives to the character development in this fictitious novel. How concepts and themes like culture, identity, sense of belonging, nationality, sense of self, roots, traditions, civilization, tasawwuf, music, dream and many others are elaborated in Tanpınar novels will be discussed. Although the familiarity Tanpınar has with the sufi tradition can be presumed, it is also seen that he brings his own interpretation to it. In this literature where some researchers choose to use mysticism and some tasawwuf, this dissertation is based on the opinion that the basis of the novel Mahur Beste clearly rests on sufism. In addition to this, the definition and the of Bildungsroman, which is one of the literary genres in Europe and the sufi elements of the novel Mahur Beste will be sought.
