The movie “Prozac Nation” discusses Elizabeth Wurtzel’s, a freshman student of the department of journalism, experience of depression, and how its process continued in different circumstances such as love, family, school, and friendship. Her parents divorced before she was 2 years old; therefore, she has already been in the psychotherapy process for long years. What she has experienced at Harvard University triggers her depression again. Elizabeth does not want to get support because of her psychotherapy experiences that she has not benefited from in the past. On the other hand, she decides to get support and starts psychotherapy due to the cognitive and behavioral processes that she presents in the face of the events she experiences due to her emotional state. Throughout this process, it is seen that Elizabeth tries to cope with depression in different ways in family, friendship, and close relationships. Elizabeth's personality and past experiences that caused her depression, her mother's parental attitudes, and cognitive and behavioral responses to the events she experienced while on treatment because of depression are discussed within the scope of the helicopter parenting, Erikson’s psychosocial development stages, and Beck’s depression model.

Prozac Toplumu filmi gazetecilik bölümü öğrencisi olan Elizabeth Wurtzel’in depresyon sürecini, bu süreçte aşk, aile, okul, arkadaşlık gibi farklı bağlamlarda deneyimlediği olayları ve tedavi sürecini ele alır. Henüz iki yaşına gelmeden anne ve babası boşanan Elizabeth, uzun yıllardır psikoterapi süreci içerisindedir. Harvard Üniversitesi’nde yaşadığı olaylar depresyonunun yeniden tetiklenmesine yol açar. Elizabeth, geçmişte fayda görmediği psikoterapi deneyimleri nedeniyle destek almak istemez. Öte yandan içinde bulunduğu duygu durum nedeniyle yaşadığı olaylar karşısında ortaya koyduğu bilişsel ve davranışsal süreçler sonucunda destek almaya karar verir ve psikoterapiye başlar. Film, Elizabeth’in depresyonun ortaya çıkmasına neden olan yaşantıları, kişiliği ve annesinin ebeveynlik tutumları, tedavisi devam ederken deneyimlediği olaylara karşı verdiği bilişsel ve davranışsal tepkiler üzerinden ele alınır. Bu süreçte Elizabeth’in aile, arkadaşlık ve yakın ilişkilerde depresyonla farklı şekillerde baş etmeye çalıştığı görülür. Elizabeth'in kişiliği, depresyonuna neden olan geçmiş deneyimleri, annesinin ebeveyn tutumları ve depresyon nedeniyle tedavi sırasında karşılaştığı olaylara bilişsel ve davranışsal tepkileri helikopter ebeveynlik, Erikson’un psikososyal gelişim dönemleri ve Beck’in depreson modeli çerçevesinde tartışılmaktadır.
