For centuries, it has been a fundamental motivation for individuals to be informed and learn about the events occurring around them. Since the 17th century, when the foundations of modern journalism were laid, newspapers that were published in certain time periods and diversified in terms of content gained importance in conveying news to the masses. Today, online channels are also significant beside the printed media, television and radio. As a matter of fact, social media platforms that aroused through web 2.0 technology are also remarkable mediums of recent times in spreading news to the audiences.
In time, colored news that enable us to depart from the reality of daily life, came in to our lives as well as serious ones. Starting from the late 19th century, tabloidization and tabloid journalism gain a seat in the newspaper through tabloid news and sensational journalism. The attention given to those who have reputation in the society and their lives gave acceleration to tabloid journalism. The short texts and catchy visuals, which are the characteristics of tabloid journalism became the type of content that contributed to the readability of newspapers.
The social media platforms which provide an opportunity to spread the news quickly with the content types like text, photograph and video augments the existence of reporters in such platforms day by day. Instagram, as well as other platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, is also a channel for reporters in their purpose of conveying the news to the target audience. For today’s tabloid journalism, Instagram, which comes into prominence through its photograph and video sharing features, has become a notable channel. In this study, three accounts were chosen through purposeful sampling and their content published between the time period of October 13-20, 2019 were examined with the purpose of revealing how Instagram is being used in tabloid journalism. The content analysis was performed by basing on Dağtaş’s (2006:124) categories, which are for determining the content of tabloid supplements, and also for examining the topics that are discussed in such supplements. As a result of the findings, it was seen that the magazine news accounts on Instagram mostly shared news content in the category of “fashion phenomena and appearances in relation to consumption and lifestyles.
