Export activities are indicated as the dynamo stone of the economies of developing countries such as Turkey. In this study, the interaction between exports as the most important constituent of foreign currency inflow and container transportation is analyzed. Provided that, in the first section, the export structure of Turkey as well as its place in maritime container transportation is discussed. The analysis section involves the testing of the relation between the export figures and the figures of freight of export goods in the period of 2005-2020 with the use of Toda-Yamamoto Causality analysis developed by Toda and Yamamoto in 1995. The statistics on the export figures are attained from the Turkish Statistical Institute and Turkish Exporters Assembly; whereas the figures of freight of export goods are attained from the statistics prepared by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, Department of Maritime Trade Development as well as Planning and Statistics Department based on the data concerning the container ports in Turkey where freight handlings are performed in relation to the container types. According to the results of the analysis, it is presented that there is a relation of causality from exports and to the Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU); indicating that the changes in exports have an effect on the number of containers handled and TEU whereas the changes in TEU does not cause a change in exports henceforth showing that there is not a relation of causality from TEU to exports.
