Education and Poverty Alleviation: A Regional Evidence From Turkey

In this study, we investigated the long-run role of education on poverty alleviation using
the sub-national data of Turkey from 2008 to 2018. Firstly, we explore the cointegration properties
of the data. Secondly, we estimate the long-run relationship between education and poverty by
employing the Fully Modified OLS (FMOLS) and Dynamic OLS (DOLS) estimators. Thirdly, we
reveal the direction of causality. We find that secondary and tertiary education help to eliminate
sub-national poverty in Turkey. Moreover, the empirical results demonstrate that tertiary education
has a higher effect in comparison with secondary education in reducing poverty.
