Background: Physical requirements of people should be primarily met in order to survive. Individual hygiene is one of the most important physical requirements. Nurses should help patients in patient care, meet requirements that patients cannot handle and make patients become able to meet their own requirements. Objective: This descriptive study was conducted to determine the status of meeting individual hygiene requirements of patients by the nurses who worked at Gevher Nesibe Faculty of Medicine Hospitals of Erciyes University. Method: Sample of the study was composed of totally 195 nurses working in services (units) where care practices were intensely done. Data of the study were collected with a questionnaire form which was designed to determine status of meeting patients’ individual hygiene requirements of the nurses after a literature review by the researchers. Percentage and chi-square test in four-eyed and multi-eyed layouts were used for statistical data analysis. Results: Of participant nurses, 46.7 % were aged between 24-28 years, 51.3 % were married, 65.6 % graduated from college, 41.2 % had working experience of 1-5 years, 42.5 % worked in internal diseases clinics, 81.0 % worked with a day-night shift and 33.6 % gave care to 12-18 patients on average. Of the nurses, 86.7 % gave mouth care, 79.5 % gave hand-face care, 67.2 % gave perinea care, 56.4 % gave foot care, 55.9 % gave hair care, 52.8 % helped body and bed bathe and 44.1 % gave nail care. When compared with other clinics, nurses working in intensive care units were determined to do more individual hygiene practices of the patients (p<0.001). Conclusion: More than half of the nurses were found to meet patients’ individual hygiene requirements and it was concluded that in-service educations should be held to provide increment in hygiene practices and observational studies be conducted in wider sample size.
Bulgular: Çalışmada hemşirelerin % 46.7' si 24-28 yaş grubunda, % 51.3'ü evli, % 65.6'sı lisans mezunu, % 41.2' sinin çalışma süresi 1-5 yıl, % 42.5'i dahili kliniklerde çalışmakta, % 81.0' ı gündüz gece dönüşümlü çalışmakta ve % 33.6'sı ortalama 12 -18 hastaya bakım vermektedir.
