Düşünce İle Dil Arasındaki İlişkiye Descartes’ın Yaklaşımı

Bu makalenin konusu, Descartes’ın düşünce ile dil arasındaki ilişki üzerine refleksiyonlarıdır. Descartes, hayvanların kendi aralarındaki iletişim biçimlerinin bir dil meydana getirmekten uzak olduğuna inanır. Papağanların ve saksağanların, kelimeleri taklit edebilen sesler çıkarması, onların hakikaten konuştuğu anlamına gelmez. Descartes, Montaigne’nin ve Charron’un hayvanların da dili olduğu iddiasını kesinlikle reddeder. Descartes’a göre konuşma yeteneği, hayvan ile insan arasındaki fıtrat/tabiat farklılığının başlıca emaresidir. Descartes’ın felsefesi açısından düşünce ve dil insanda, maddî ve biyolojik evrimin bir ürünü değildir; insanın bir akıllı ruh ile yaratılmış olmasının tezahürleridir. İdealar akıllı ruhta fıtratı/tabiatı icabı bulunduğu gibi, dil de insanda fıtrî bir melekedir. Tecrübenin ve öğrenmenin işlevi sadece, bu potansiyeli fiilî hale dönüştürmekten ibarettir. Descartes’ın düşünce ile dil arasındaki ilişkiye yaklaşımı birçok filozofa ilham vermiştir. Bu filozoflardan biri olan Chomsky, dil öğrenmeninve konuşmanın yalın bir uyaran-tepki koşullanması ile açıklanamayacak bir zihinsel süreç olduğu üzerinde durarak davranışçı dilbilim teorilerine Kartezyen bir perspektiften karşı çıkmıştır

DESCARTES’ APPROACH TO RELATION BETWEEN THOUGHT AND LANGUAGE

This article is about the reflections of Descartes between thought and language. Descartes believes that, the means of communication between animals is far from establishing a language. Parrots’ and magpies’ sounding like echoing the words does not mean that they can actually speak. Descartes definitely rejects the assertion of Montaigne and Charron that the animals, too, have got a language. According to Descartes, ability to speak is the primary evidence of the creational/natural difference between human beings and animals. In terms of Cartesian philosophy, thought and language in human beings are the outcomes not of material and biological evolution, but of human beings’ creation with a spirit. While ideas are present in the spirit as a matter of its creation/nature, language is also an innate ability. Function of experience and learning consists only of converting potential into actual condition. Descartes’ approach towards the relationship between thought and language inspired quite a number of philosophers. One of philosophers mentioned above, Chomsky, rejected the behaviorist linguistics theories from a Cartesian perspective, by emphasizing the fact that learning a language and to speak are of a mental process, inexplicable with a mere stimulus-response conditioning
