Planning and maintaining city squares, which are examples of public spaces, in line with universal design principles and taking into account accessibility standards, is important for individuals with different characteristics that make up the society. In this article, the problems experienced by disabled individuals in terms of accessibility are discussed in the context of city squares. In the study, an on-site experience study was conducted with a group of visually impaired individuals in a selected city square. Arifiye Square in Sakarya Province has been preferred because of its location that is increasing the potential and development in trade and industry, and creating job opportunities for disabled individuals. Random assignment technique was used in the selection of the participants in the field study. The participants were informed about the purpose of the research, its benefits, the mode of execution and what is expected of them. The participant group experienced the city square on site by following a predetermined route that they could use for their daily mandatory needs with a guide, and individually filled out the form prepared in line with the "universal design principles". In this direction, the compatibility of the existing Arifiye City Square with the universal design principles and determined sub-parameters was evaluated. As a result of the conducted case study, it was determined that the physical conditions of the square were insufficient for individuals with different age and disability groups and access problems were experienced in the area. A sample city square design was proposed where disabled individuals could find solutions to their physical and social access problems. The necessity of structuring the living spaces of the city in line with the principles of holistic and universal design, not separating the individuals that make up the society, was deemed necessary for a sustainable and human-friendly urban design. It is possible to repeat the carried out case study in different public spaces with different subject groups.
