The Reconstructionist Jewish Movement is known as the youngest Jewish school among Jewish denominations in America. Its distinction from other Jewish sects (Reformist, Neo-Orthodox and Conservative Judaism) was born and developed in America in the first half of the XXth century. This movement emerged with the thoughts and actions of Mordecai Menahem Kaplan (1881-1983), a Jewish rabbi, philosopher, theologian and educator. Kaplan’s the most orijinal aspect is his diverse comment to Judaism. Kaplan's most original aspect is his distinct interpretation of Judaism. According to him Judaism is not a religion; It is a civilization formed by the Jews in ages. Judaism is a civilization that consists of the common history, literature, language, folk beliefs and sanctions, standards of conduct, social organization, social and spiritual ideals and aesthetic values of the Jews. Kaplan bases on this definition of Judaism on four approaches: Naturalist, organismal-holistic, democratic, and pragmatic approach. Kaplan advocated a realist and rationalist understanding against to a supernatural concept of religion. He argues that all the elements of Jewish civilization are living and integrally linked to each other organically. She thought that Judaism should be compatible with democracy and benefit the Jewish community.
