A Study on Reliability and Validity of Lay (1986)'s General Procrastination Scale

This study aims to examine the General Procrastination Scale developed by Lay (1986) in terms of factor structure and psychometric properties. Lay (1986) has defined the construct as a uni-dimensional structure made up of twenty items to assess the general procrastination tendencies of individuals. Exploring the factor structure of the general procrastination scale is of significance because, as a personality trait, it is considered as an antecedent for various human behaviors, decisions, and personal reactions. For this study, two different questionnaires were applied to the participants with an age of 18 and over living in Sakarya, Ankara, and Istanbul provinces with the convenience sampling method. The total number of participants who volunteered for the study was 440. In the first study, explanatory factor analysis showed that the scale differed from the original version by obtaining a structure consisting of four dimensions made up of sixteen items. In the second study, confirmatory factor analysis was utilized to confirm the proposed factor structure in the first stage. Two items with low factor loading and high error variance were removed from the analysis. The findings have confirmed the four-factor structure with fourteen items. It is argued that the dimensional structure of the commonly used general procrastination scale may show variation within and across cultures, and it is emphasized that more valid and reliable scales for the construct under consideration are needed to measure the phenomenon more accurately through its antecedents and consequences.

Öz
Bu çalışmanın amacı, Lay (1986) tarafından geliştirilen Genel Erteleme Ölçeğini faktör yapısı ve psikometrik özellikler açısından incelemektir. Sözkonusu ölçek bireylerin genel erteleme eğilimlerini değerlendiren yirmi maddeden oluşan tek boyutlu bir yapı olarak tanımlanmıştır. Başlangıçta bir kişilik özelliği olarak tanımlanan birçok davranışın, kararın ve kişisel tepkinin önceli olarak değerlendirilen bu kavramın boyutsal analizinin ortaya konması önem arz etmektedir. Araştırma bağlamında Sakarya, Ankara ve İstanbul illerinde yaşayan 18 yaş ve üzeri katılımcılara kolayda örnekleme yöntemi ile iki farklı anket çalışması uygulanmıştır. Çalışmalar toplam 440 katılımcı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. İlk çalışmada, açıklayıcı faktör analizi, on altı madde ve dört boyuttan oluşan bir yapı elde edilerek ölçeğin orijinal versiyonundan farklılaştığını göstermiştir. İkinci çalışmada, doğrulayıcı faktör analizi, faktör yük değeri düşük ve hata varyansı yüksek olan iki maddenin çıkarılması ile tekrar edilmiştir. Tek boyut olarak geliştirilmiş olan genel erteleme ölçeğinin, bu çalışma bulgularına göre on dört madde ve dört boyutlu bir yapıdan oluşmakta olduğu doğrulanmıştır. Yaygın olarak kullanılan genel erteleme ölçeğinin gerek aynı kültürel yapı gerekse farklı kültürel yapılar içinde ortaya çıkan boyutsal yapısının farklılık gösterebileceği ifade edilerek, erteleme davranışının öncellerine yönelik çalışmaların gelecekte de yapılarak olguyu ölçmeye yönelik daha geçerli ve güvenilir ölçeklerin gerekliliği vurgulanmaktadır.
