This cross-sectional study aims to determine the attitudes of students in the department of nursing of a public university towards nanotechnology and the factors that affect them. The study sample was 382 students selected using simple random sampling and the sample size determination formula for the estimation of the population means. The study was conducted with a 100% participation rate. The data were collected using the Nanotechnology Attitude Scale, developed and tested for validity and reliability by Kurnaz and Bayraktar. The data analysis was performed arithmetic means, standard deviations, frequencies and percentages. The Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis H test were used to compare the attitude scores according to the independent variables. The threshold for significance was p<0,05 for the comparisons. It was found that 63,4% of the participants followed developments in nursing, 78,5% believed that nanotechnology has both benefits and harms, 69,9% wanted information about nanotechnology and 42,9% wanted to work in nanotechnology.
The students’ mean score on the valuation of nanotechnology was 26,05±5,390 out of 44. Their mean score on awareness of nanotechnology was 19,90±4,140 out of 32, and their mean score on attitudes towards nanotechnology was 45,95±7,903 out of 76. These results were found to be moderate. It was found that students who want to work in this field, who want to obtain information and who follow the developments in nursing had more positive attitudes towards nanotechnology (p=0,000). The students who want to obtain information and follow developments in nursing value nanotechnology more (p=0,000) and had higher awareness (p<0,05). The students who believed that nanotechnology has both benefits and harms were found to have higher awareness (p=0,038). The variables of gender, year in the university and high school type had no effect on students’ attitudes towards nanotechnology.
