Yıl 2023, Cilt: 26 Sayı: 2, 439 - 460, 23.06.2023

Öz

Abusive management, which is one of the issues that negatively affect employee behavior in organizational life, expresses the subjective evaluations of employees about verbal or nonverbal hostile behaviors constantly displayed by managers against subordinates, except for physical contact. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the effect of abusive management style on negative workplace gossip and the mediating role of emotional self-efficacy in the relationship between these two variables. Quantitative research method was adopted to examine the relationships between research variables. Questionnaire method was used to collect data. The population of the research consists of employees working in the health sector in Malatya city of Turkey. With the convenience sampling method, 369 health employees were reached. Structural equation modeling (SEM), a second generation statistical analysis method, was used for the analysis of the obtained data. According to the research findings, as a result of direct impact analysis, it was seen that abusive management had a positive effect on negative workplace gossip. In addition, it was determined that abusive management negatively affected emotional self-efficacy and self-efficacy perception negatively affected negative workplace gossip. According to the results of the indirect effect analysis, it was concluded that the self-efficacy perception of the employees fully mediated the relationship between abusive management and negative workplace gossip. It is thought that the results of the research will contribute to the literature on the concepts of abusive management, negative workplace gossip and self-efficacy and will shed light on future studies on these concepts.
