Purpose: To investigate the effect of activity-role participation on the quality of life of geriatric individuals.
Material and Method: Included in the study were the individuals who were ages over 65 years and over admitted to the Department of Geriatrics of İbni Sina Hospital, Ankara University. Sociodemographic form, Human Activity Role Screening Tool assessment scale and Short Form-36 quality of life scale were administered to all individuals.
Results:In our study, 70 people; 40 women (age:76,75 ± 7,41 years), 30 men (age: 78,33 ± 7,07 years) were included. The average Human Activity Role Screening Tool assessment total score of individuals was 60.24 ± 13.25. The motivation of the elderly individuals for activity-role was found to be “disabled”, activity-role pattern, process skills, motor skills, and environment, “supported participation”, communication-interaction skills at “provide” level. Short Form-36 summary scores, the mean score of physical health function was 45.93±29.13and the mean score of mental health components was 54.31±26.22. The lowest mean score in the subscales was 9.64 ± 25.99 in the physical role difficulty subscale and the highest mean score in the Mental Health subscale was 54.31 ± 26.22. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between Human Activity-role total scores with subgroups of Short Form-36(r=0.515 p<0.00).
Conclusion: : Our results show that the participation of older individuals in the activity-role is not enough. It was found out that elderly individuals needed support for activity-role participation. It was determined that Inadequate the activity-role participation levels had a negative effect on quality of life. Examination of the quality of life of elderly people and all the parameters that will affect this will shed light on Occupational Theraphy interventions in this field.
