The Benefit of Tru-Cut Biopsy in Breast Masses

Backgrounds: To investigate the diagnostic benefit of tru-cut biopsy made under ultrasonography guidance
in breast masses.
Methods: A retrospective review was made of the records of 103 consecutive female patients who
underwent tru-cut biopsy under ultrasonography guidance for a mass lesion determined in the breast
mammographically and ultrasonographically in our hospital Radiology Department between November
2009 and May 2011. Radiological and pathological conformity and location in the breast were evaluated in
these lesions. Results: The mean age of the patients was 47 years. The mean size of the lesion was 20.45mm (range, 5-
80mm). The mass was located in the right breast in 52.4% of cases and in the left breast in 47.6% and most
frequently in the upper external quadrant (49.5%). Location was observed in the upper internal quadrant in
18.4%, in the lower internal quadrant at 8.7% and the lower external quadrant at 18.4% with only 4.9%
located in the retroareolar region. No statistically significant difference was determined between malignant
and benign lesions in respect of location. In the histopathological evaluation, 53 (51.4%) lesions were benign
and 50 (48.6%) were malignant. There was full conformity to BIRADS 3 and BIRADS 5 between the
pathological diagnoses and the radiological grading of the lesions. Of 20 cases classified as BIRADS 4, 9
were diagnosed as benign and 11 as malignant.
Conclusions: Tru-cut biopsy made under ultrasonography guidance is a highly reliable method which can be
quickly applied to give rapid results, allowing preoperative planning to be made more safely.
