Aim: In this study, we aimed to retrospectively analyze the results of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test performed in our hospital and to investigate the rates of diagnosis and the rates of outpatients and inpatients.
Method: In this retrospective study, the Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction test results of the patients who were evaluated within the scope of the Covid-19 pandemic, who applied to our hospital in March 2020 and September 2020, were included. Age, gender, pneumonia status, symptomatic treatment, outpatient or inpatient follow-up, and discharge status of the patients were obtained retrospectively from the hospital records.
Results: A total of 5658 patients were included in the study. In our study, 2252 (39.8%) of the patients who underwent PCR tests were symptomatic, and 3406 (60.2%) were asymptomatic. 5280 (93.3%) patients were PCR negative and 378 (6.7%) patients were PCR positive. The PCR-positive patient had a recent travel history. Of the PCR-positive patients, 123 (33%) were hospitalized and treated. The remaining 249 (67%) patients were treated orally at home.
Conclusion: Polymerase chain reaction test is the gold standard method in the diagnosis of Covid-19. Appropriate collection and handling of samples may affect test positivity rates. It is important to know the local and national PCR rates to take the necessary measures in the management and prevention of epidemics.
