. In Turkey, there is a competitive environment in education and students want to be a student in institutions in which more successful students study. The schools in which successful students study have a limited capacity so there is always an exam on 8th-grade student take. Although the name of the exam and question types changed many times, there is still an anxiety-provoking exam and students feel nervous to about this exam. This article describes the impact of self-regulation and motivation on the students’ attitudes to LGS examination. Motivational Strategy Scale, developed by Pintrinch and De Groot (1990) and adapted to Turkish by Üredi (2005), was used as the data collection instrument. The study group of the research consisted of 81 students attending the 8th year classes of secondary schools. To analyse the data of the research, multi regression analysis was used. The research showed that LGS exam cause anxiety in all students and the students do not want to answer English test questions. Also, their self-regulation and motivation levels are quite low and this result in low success in LGS exam.
