In the Middle Iron Age, two dominant kingdoms came
into prominence in Eastern Anatolia and Mesopotamia. While the first one is the
Urartian Kingdom that had the characteristics of militancy and performed
advanced mining activities, the other one is the Assyrian Kingdom having the
capacities of statecraft tradition, campaign, and mobilization. The boundaries
between the domination areas of the two kingdoms were set by the chain of
mountains and the boundaries were crossed by the kingdoms to contact each other
directly. Besides, the two kingdoms
improved their political relations through buffer states and nomadic tribes.
The records as to these relations are partially seen on the tablets and annals that
give information about the accomplished campaigns of the kings. However, the
records mostly aim to propagandize. Thus, it is difficult to carry out an
evaluation based on written documents. Consequently, the current study evaluates
the political relations by taking into consideration the reliefs and stelae
erected by the kingdoms during
campaigns, archaeological finds and topography in addition to the written
documents.
