Being in various colours and patterns and in addition to having been used
especially in the artefacts of Sinan the Architect for structural purposes, stone,
which is an important material of Ottoman architecture of XVIth century, has
been a fundamental material in terms of its ornamental usage. Throughout this
study, the stone elements of Rüstem Paşa Mosque, which is one of the artefacts
of Sinan the Architect, have been examined and characteristic features of the
period on stone ornaments have been revealed. First, the stones, which had been
used, were identified, then, the dispersion of stone ornaments, which shows
improvement under the influence of architecture, of the artefact was specified,
and patterns and techniques of ornaments have been examined.
When we take a look at the fields of usage for the stone ornaments in Rüstem
Paşa Mosque, we see that these stone ornaments are used on mihrab, minbar,mahfils, arches, columns, bases and capital of columns, jambs of windows and
doors, Inscriptions, mihrabiyes, coverings, rosettes, shadirvan, and minaret.
Traditionally used ornamentation techniques on stone ornaments are relief,
engraving, latticework, inserting, and dressing. Within the ornaments of this
artefact, many colourful stone ornaments, which were formed with the usage
of spoli materials, geometric ornaments, floral ornaments, calligraphies, and
ornaments formed with architectural forms are present.
