Objective: Growing pains is the most common cause of recurrent musculoskeletal pain in children. First described in the 1800s, despite attracting the interest of many researchers, the etiology of this condition still remains unclear. Growing pains, though generally considered benign, can cause considerable anxiety in the parents. The present study was performed as a descriptive study to evaluate the level of knowledge, attitudes and behavior patterns regarding growing pain among the parents of patients brought to a tertiary care pediatric emergency department with any reason. Material and Methods: The researchers informed the parents in the emergency department about the study, and they applied a questionnaire which contains five questions, reflecting the definition of growing pain. Results: A total of 1000 parents participated in the study and 93% of them were mothers. The mean age of the patients was 6.25±5.48 and the mean number of children in the family was 2.45±1.22 children. 27.7% of the parents stated that they did not know the definition of growing pain. The research showed that 43.1% of parents took their child with growing pains to the doctor, while other parents preferred massage and analgesic medication as treatments. Conclusion: Management of growing pains generally consists of conservative care with massage and over-the-counter analgesics, as well as reassurance to children and parents about the benign, self-limited nature of this condition. Discussing the natural course of growing pains with parents can be helpful in decreasing anxiety and reduce the number of emergency department admissions.
