The Path to Volunteering: Transmission of Human, Social and Cultural Capital in the Family

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 9 Sayı: 2, 412 - 421, 30.12.2024

Öz

Existing research on volunteering often categorises motives and functions, but also highlights the limitations of focusing on individual attitudes alone. Contextual factors such as systemic barriers and intergenerational transmission of human, social and cultural capital have a significant impact on the potential for volunteering. This study examines the role of families in promoting volunteering by investing in three types of a child's capital. It highlights the importance of formal education and extra-curricular activities that develop skills in the likelihood of volunteering, and shows how the growth of social capital in trust and relationships within the family fosters volunteering. It also points out how cultural capital, transmitted through direct encouragement and role modelling, reinforces the possibility of volunteering across generations. Finally, it shows that this transmission, where the warm and supportive relationship of the parent with the child has a moderating effect, contributes to participation and social cohesion in the wider society..
