Fair play orientations of professional basketball players: A scenario-based qualitative analysis

Öz

This study aims to determine the fair play orientations of professional basketball players through scenarios that include dilemma stories based on fair play and unfair behaviors. Due to the close contact nature of basketball, fair and unfair behaviors can be encountered frequently during the game. In this sense, decisions made in critical positions at the moment of the game can significantly influence the course of the game. The research was conducted with 12 professional basketball players competing in the Turkish Basketball League using phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods. In the data collection phase, an individual information form was applied to each athlete. The athletes were presented with six scenarios, three of which included fair play behaviors and three of which included unfair behaviors created by the researchers and prepared with expert opinion. The athletes were asked to answer semi-structured questions about how they would feel when they "saw, heard, and experienced" the situation given in the scenario. The data were analyzed deductively using the thematic analysis technique. In the data analysis, the stages of deciding on the design issues, determining the themes, developing the code, verifying the code, and using the code were applied, respectively. It was determined that 99 answers the athletes gave in line with the scenarios were grouped under the theme of "fair play appropriate behavioral orientation," and 117 were grouped under the theme of "unfair behavioral orientations.” According to the results, the responses to the scenarios, including fair and unfair play behaviors, show that the athletes tend to exhibit behaviors by understanding fair play when they see and hear such a situation. Still, when they experience the same situation, they tend to exhibit behaviors not by fair play.

Profesyonel basketbolcuların fair play yönelimleri: Senaryo temelli nitel bir analiz

Öz

Bu araştırmada; profesyonel basketbolcuların fair playe uygun ve fair playe aykırı davranışlara dayalı ikilem öyküleri içeren senaryolar aracılığıyla fair play yönelimlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Basketbol branşının, yakın temaslı yapısı dolayısıyla maç içerisinde adil ve adil olmayan davranışlarla sıkça karşılaşılabilir. Bu anlamda müsabaka anındaki kritik pozisyonlarda alınan kararlar, maçın gidişatını önemli ölçüde etkileyebilir. Araştırma, Türkiye Basketbol Ligi'nde mücadele eden 12 profesyonel basketbol oyuncusu katılımı ile nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan fenomenoloji deseni kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veri toplama aşamasında, her bir sporcuya bireysel bilgi formu uygulanmıştır. Sporculara, araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan ve uzman görüşü alınarak hazırlanan; üçü fair playe uygun davranış ve üçü fair playe aykırı davranış içeren altı senaryo sunulmuştur. Sporculardan senaryoda verilen durumu “gördüklerinde, duyduklarında ve yaşadıklarında” ne hissedeceklerine dair oluşturulmuş yarı yapılandırılmış soruları yanıtlamaları istenmiştir. Veriler, tematik analiz tekniği kullanılarak tümdengelimsel olarak analiz edilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde tasarım konularına karar verilmesi, temaların belirlenmesi, kod geliştirme ve kodun doğrulanması ile kullanılması aşamaları sırasıyla uygulanmıştır. Sporcuların senaryolar doğrultusunda vermiş oldukları 99 cevabın "fair playe uygun davranış yönelimi" teması altında toplandığı, 117 cevabın ise "fair playe aykırı davranış yönelimi" teması altında toplandığı tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre; fair ve fair playe aykırı davranışları içeren senaryolara verilen yanıtlar, sporcuların, böyle bir durumu gördüklerinde ve duyduklarında fair play anlayışına uygun davranış sergileme, ancak aynı durumu yaşadıklarında ise fair playe uygun olmayan davranış sergileme yöneliminde olduklarını göstermektedir.
