Can Running-Based Sprint Performance Predict Kicking Speed of Sub-Elite Taekwondo Athletes?

Yıl 2023, Cilt: 3 Sayı: 1, 14 - 27, 27.03.2023

Öz

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the kicking velocities of sub-elite taekwondo athletes and their running-based general, directional, and repetitive sprint speeds, and to determine the running models predicting kicking speed performance.
Method: The study was conducted with the voluntary participation of 30 sub-elite taekwondo athletes (15 male, 15 female). The straight, directional and repetitive sprint performances of the athletes were determined by 20-meter sprint, Illinois and 35-meter interval sprint tests, respectively. Taekwondo Performance Protocol was used to determine the kicking speed of the athletes. After the obtained data were subjected to descriptive statistics and normality analysis, One-Way Anova was used to compare the data and Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between the data. Linear regression analysis was performed to determine the running patterns that could predict kicking speed.
Results: The results showed that there were moderate to high correlations between 20-meter sprint, Illinois sprint and 35-meter repeated sprint performances and average and maximum kick speed performances of male and female athletes. Linear regression analysis revealed that 20-meter sprint and Illinois sprint were significant predictors of average and maximum kick velocity.
Conclusion: As a result, it was determined that the relationships between running-based sprint performance and kicking speed performance in sub-elite taekwondo athletes were significant, and running-based sprint performance tests are important to identify athletes who have the potential to kick fast in taekwondo. Especially 20 meters and Illinois sprints are important tests to make accurate predictions in talent selection.
