Many
spoon-like tools were found in the excavations executed in many civilizations’
settlements established since the earliest times in history. The spoon, which
is understood to be an integral part of human nutrition culture, has always
existed in human life from past to present. The manufacturing of the spoon,
which is an important tool of the tables, has become a part of traditional
handicrafts. Traditional spoon making, which varies according to the
traditional form, manufacturing style and raw materials, has become an
important element of cultural heritage with its unique features. Although
handmade spoon production has decreased recently, spoon making is striving to
remain as a part of cultural life with its last representatives in some regions
of Anatolia. One of these regions is Pusacık village of Amasya Gümüşhacıköy.
This study attempts to introduce the traditional wooden spoon manufacturing
method, the tools and equipment used in the manufacturing, the stages of
manufacturing and the local manufacturing terminology. The transformation
stages of the tree coming from the forest, to tomaka, fasaltak and from there to
spoons in the hands of Pusacık’s craft masters, whose number is decreasing day
by day, were determined in the course of traditional manufacturing. The
contribution made to the traditional folk culture of the region through the
spoon types called “Akpınar”, “Kertmebogaz”, and “Sevkiyat” was also discussed
in the study.
