Aim: This research aimed to evaluate the news of violence against physicians published during the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of media ethics.
Method: The data of the research were obtained from the archives of Sözcü, Hürriyet, and Milliyet newspapers, which had the highest circulation during the COVID-19 pandemic, between 22.03.2020 and 09.08.2022 using the keywords "Physician and violence", "Doctor and violence". The data collection phase was completed between 12-30.09.2022. 63 different violent news were evaluated using the content analysis method. Qualitative data from the analysis of news headlines and contents were collected under 6 themes: Video broadcast information; Putting the attacker in a strong position and the physician in a weak and defenseless position; Justification for violence; Emphasizing the continuity of violence; Gender approach; Information about the legal process. Percentage distribution was examined in the data analysis, and tables and graphs were used in the presentation.
Result: As a result of the research; It was determined that the media took an approach that encouraged the reader to read violent news with exaggerated, sensational expressions during the pandemic process and legitimized violent incidents. In addition, news headlines and content were damaging to the reputation and dignity of physicians.
Conclusion: In conclusion, The media approach that existed before the pandemic in reporting incidents of violence against physicians continued during the pandemic. Journalists and media organizations need to adopt a professional approach when reporting news of violence against physicians and take care to reduce the negative effects on the medical profession and society. Legislators and professional associations should take into account the impact of the media on the presentation of news about violence against physicians and make the necessary interventions on this issue.
