Öz

871-899 yılları arasında Batı Saksonları’nın kralı olarak hüküm süren Büyük Alfred İngiltere tarihinin en önemli yöneticilerinden biri olarak kabul edilmektedir. Alfred, Anglosakson Britanya’nın parçalı siyasi yapısını birleştirmesinin yanı sıra Britanya halklarını “İngiliz” çatısı altında toplamaya çalışmıştır. Adaya yönelik Viking akınlarını durdurmak konusunda oldukça başarılı olan Alfred İngiliz tarihinin “Büyük” unvanlı ilk kralıdır. Askeri ve siyasi başarılarının yanı sıra eğitim, hukuk ve sosyal alanlarda başlatmış olduğu reform hareketleri, Alfred’i çağdaşı olan yöneticiler arasında öne çıkarmaktadır. Alfred’in hayatı ve dönemin önemli olayları, çağdaşı ve St. David Başpiskoposu Asser’in (Asserius) Vita Ælfredi Regis Angul Saxonum adlı biyografik kronikte detaylı bir şekilde anlatılmıştır. Bu çalışmada Alfred’in hayatına ilişkin önemli detaylar Asser’in kroniği ışığında incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın temel amacı, söz konusu biyografinin Alfred kültünün oluşumundaki etkilerini araştırmaktır.

King Alfred the Great of Wessex (871-899) in the Light of "Vita Ælfredi"

Öz

Alfred the Great, who reigned as king of the West Saxons between 871-899, is recognised as one of the most important rulers in British history. In addition to unifying the fragmented political structure of Anglo-Saxon Britain, Alfred tried to unite the peoples of Britain under the "British" umbrella. Alfred, who was very successful in stopping the Viking raids on the island, is the first king in British history with the title of "Great". In addition to his military and political achievements, the reform movements he initiated in the fields of education, law and social areas make Alfred stand out among the rulers of his contemporaries. Alfred's life and the important events of the period are described in detail in the biographical chronicle Vita Ælfredi Regis Angul Saxonum by his contemporary and Archbishop of St. David Asser (Asserius). In this study, important details of Alfred's life are analysed in the light of Asser's chronicle. The main purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of this biography on the formation of the cult of Alfred.
