The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge level of denistry students and academic staff in Antalya about oral cancer examination. This study was conducted in among dentistry students who examinated patients, and academic staff in Akdeniz University Faculty of Dentistry. The questionnaire which is developed by Horowitz and colleagues was used. The participants were divided into four groups: fourth grade students, fifth grade students, research assistants, and dentists who is specialist/ doctor of philosophy (Ph.D). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software p <0.05 was considered significant. A total of 132 participants included to the study, 59 of those were fourth grade dental students, 31 were fifth grade dental students, 25 were research assistants and 17 were doctor of philosophy (Ph.D). Current tobacco use and past tobacco use are questioned by 73.5% and 53.8% of participants, respectively. he relationship between patients' past alcohol use, current alcohol use, past tobacco use, the questioning of the history of cancer in the patient's family and educational status was significant, and p values were 0.002, 0.05, 0.028 and 0.012, respectively. 56.8% of participants think that they are sufficiently educated about oral cancer examination. Frequency of oral cancer examination in edentulous patients was found very low ( 20.5%). According to the results of this study, although more than half of the participants think that they are sufficiently educated about oral cancer examination, they can not apply it clinically. The underlying causes of this situation should be investigated and resolved.
