The purpose of this study is to show the existence of individualisation in Islam and that it
can be written at least on a theoretical level. This article argues that there is religious
individualisation in Islamic societies, but this occurs between the individual and the text (the
Qur'an), not between God and him/her. According to the Western definitions and contents, the
concept of religious individualization mostly describes a “non-mediation” situation between God
and the individual. Therefore, acting from the contents of the concept of individualisation defining
Western sociology may be wrong for Islamic societies. This study goes through the concepts of
modern Salafism, modernism and postmodernism to capture the types of individualisation in Islam.
However, without going into the details of these concepts, it passes as a summary and turns to the
main focus of the study.
The study focuses on the idea that all individualist ideas in Islam are under "text" control.
This control (domination) restricts the individual's free mind and constantly directs it to the text to
find Islamic truth. The person seeking the truth apart from the text, is under the obligation to prove
that the truth found is included in the text. The method of modern Salafism is based on explaining
the text with another text. Modernists are responsible for proving that their conclusions are included
in the text. Postmodernists focus on the horizontal positioning of the truth hidden by the text, rather
than entering the text essentially. Thus, while religious individualisation emerges as an individual’s
interpretation of God in western sociology, it emerges as an individual’s interpretation of the text in
Islamic societies.
