Objective: The research was conducted to determine the perceptions and experiences of nurses and midwives during the pandemic period and the factors affecting this experience.
Method: Research was conducted with a qualitative method. The participants are 20 nurses and midwives working in the obstetrics and gynecology clinic. Data were collected between September and November 2020 by personal information form and semi-structured interview form, face-to-face, and in-depth individual interview methods. Content analysis was used to evaluate the data.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 35.30 ±6.62 years, 80% (n=16) were midwives and 20% (n=4) were nurses. The themes of "perceiving the pandemic", "changes in care services during the pandemic", "difficulties" and "gains" emerged in the research. It was determined that the participants experienced anxiety and stress about the transmission of Covid 19 to themselves and their close family members, also felt fatigued, worthless, and angry due to working conditions and administrative reasons. In this process, it was observed that the follow-up of nurses and midwives, and the education of patients have changed. It has been determined that nurses and midwives have difficulties in daily living activities, and administrative and personal protective equipment use during the pandemic, and their professional self-esteem is strengthened due to their ability to manage the crisis.
Conclusion: In the pre-vaccination period of the pandemic, there were changes in the care services for pregnant, newborn, and gynecology patients. In this process, nurses and midwives were affected physically, psychologically, and socially.
