This study focuses on the character of Cilalı İbo, an important but neglected character in Turkish comedic cinema. As a case study, it offers an in-depth and longitudinal study of the character and, through this lens, draws conclusions about the everyday forms of resistance poor people employ. It explores the political processes in which Cilalı İbo participates in his daily life, and it analyzes the conceptual forms these acts of participation take. The study has three levels: (a) poverty, everyday life, and everyday resistance; (b) the philosophical path employed by humor; and (c) a metaphoric and metonymic reading of the Cilalı İbo films. The study argues that the character of Cilalı İbo behaves childishly through a desire to return to the carefree years of childhood, embracing a mechanism of self-defense that transfers the attributes and privileges of childhood into adulthood. This “becoming,” revealed through his lisp, paves the way for the deterritorialization of the native language and a movement beyond the usual harmony of human relations.
