Examination of Visual Abstracts Used in Scientific Publications Within the Context of Design Principles and Visual Perception Theory

Öz

Visual abstract (VA) is the visualized form of the summary text used especially in academic publications. VAs that visualize the problem, purpose, method and basic findings of scientific studies are one of the effective tools in explaining and transferring information. In addition, they are visual materials that facilitate mental understanding and accelerate learning in scientific definitions. The definition of VAs that transfer information with the help of visuals, especially in applied trainings, was made in the study. In this study, which aims to evaluate VAs, which have started to be used frequently in scientific publications, in the context of visual perception theories and to emphasize their importance, 5 VAs published in Web of Science and used in its publications were selected with the non-probability sampling method, one of the qualitative data tools. The selected VAs were evaluated in terms of their functionality within the framework of the 8-item VA design criterion and 6 visual perception theories, and the findings were reached. VAs were analyzed according to visual perception theories determined as Gestalt Perception Theory, Probabilistic Functionalism Theory, Neurophysiological Perception Theory, Empiricist-Constructivist Perception Theory, Computational Perception Theory, Direct Perception Theory. It is expected that the study, which reveals how VAs used to facilitate science education and disseminate scientific publications are designed in terms of perception theories and VA design principles, will be a source for textbooks, workbooks or academic publications. It is also expected to be an example for VAs considered to be used for academic publications, educational books and supplementary educational materials.

BİLİMSEL YAYINLARDA KULLANILAN GÖRSEL ÖZETLERİN TASARIM İLKELERİ VE GÖRSEL ALGI KURAMLARI BAĞLAMINDA İNCELENMESİ

Öz

Görsel özet (GÖ) özellikle akademik yayınlarda kullanılan özet metnin görselleştirilmiş halidir. Yapılan bilimsel çalışmaların problem, amaç, metot ve temel bulgularını görselleştiren GÖ’ler bilgiyi anlatmada ve aktarmada etkili araçlardan biridir. Ayrıca, bilimsel tanımlarda zihinsel anlamayı kolaylaştıran ve öğrenmeyi hızlandıran görsel materyallerdir. Çalışmada özellikle uygulamalı eğitimlerde görseller yardımı ile bilgiyi aktaran GÖ’lerin tanımı yapılmıştır. Bilimsel yayınlarda da sıkça kullanılmaya başlayan GÖ’lerin görsel algı kuramları bağlamında değerlendirilmesi ve öneminin vurgulanması amaçlanan bu çalışmada WOS’da yayınlanan ve yayınlarında kullandığı 5 adet görsel özet (GÖ) nitel veri araçlarından biri olan olasılıksız örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilmiştir. Seçilen GÖ’ler 8 maddelik görsel özet tasarlama kriteri ve 6 adet görsel algı kuramı çerçevesinde işlevsellikleri açısından değerlendirilerek bulgulara ulaşılmıştır. Gestalt Algı Kuramı, Olasılıksal İşlevselcilik Kuramı, Nörofizyolojik Algı Kuramı, Deneyci-Yapılandırmacı Algı Kuramı, Bilişimsel Algı Kuramı, Doğrudan Algı kuramı olarak belirlenen görsel algı kuramlarına göre görsel özetler analiz edilmiştir. Bilim eğitiminin kolaylaştırılması ve bilimsel yayınların yaygınlaştırılması için kullanılan GÖ’lerin algı kuramları ve GÖ tasarım ilkeleri bakımından nasıl tasarlandığının ortaya çıkarıldığı çalışmanın ders kitapları, çalışma kitapları ya da akademik yayınlara kaynak olacağı beklenmektedir. Ayrıca akademik yayınlar, eğitim kitapları ve yardımcı eğitim materyalleri için kullanılası düşünülen GÖ’ler için örnek teşkil etmesi ön görülmektedir.
