Throughout history of philosophy, many thinkers considered on classification of sciences which were first started by Ancient Greek philosophers. Al-Kindī and al-Fārābī, two of founders of Islamic philosophy, were not indifferent to this topic as well. Espicially, Al-Fārābī’s classification come to the forefront both its systematicity and its originality. Philosopher’s tending to this topic caused to begin a tradition among Muslim thinkers. Music was in many of these classications as well. Islamic philosophers generally included science of music into traditional classication as known quadrivium together with arithmetics, geometry and astronomy, as predecessors philosophers did. Al-Kindī and al-Fārābī also thought music in same place. They did not just pointed out where music is on their classication of sciences but also they wrote remarkable music boks. So their music books give more idea where they placed music as well as their books which is relavant with classification. In conclusion, this article aims to determine place of music and its importance in the classification of sciences of al-Kindī and al-Fārābī.
