Türkiye Avrupa Bütünleşmesi Avrupacılık Uluslararası Avrupa Hareketi
A remarkable Europeanist movement had emerged in Turkey at the dawn of the European
integration. Documents of the Historical Archives of the European Union show that many
leading statesmen and intellectuals became members of Europeanist organizations in this period.
Generally speaking, Turkish Europeanism is influenced by domestic and international
circumstances of the period. Beginning from 1955, Turkey’s problems with Greece triggered
the rise of nationalism and brought the Europeanism to an impasse. The military coup d’état
in 1960 brought an end to the first period of the Europeanist movement but not to official
relations between the EEC and Turkey.
