This survey investigated the effect of gender on label
reading habits, and conducted with 406 consumers from the Suleymanpasa district
of the Tekirdağ province in Turkey. In this study, it was aimed to determine the knowledge
levels and attitudes of the consumers when buying foodstuffs and to find the
factors that are the most important in purchasing and to raise awareness about
the subject. The participants were asked about the importance of the food
label, the reasons for reading, the level of understanding the information on
the label, the rate of understanding the information on the label, the
information to be read more, the label of the products to be read more, the
rate of understanding the contents of the label, and the effect of the health
problem on the reading ratio of labels. According to the results, it was
observed that women paid more attention to label information and written
statements were more effective. For label information, it was found that
television was a more important educational tool and health problems were
effective in label reading. Programs to be published on television reading
labeling could make serious contributions to public awareness. It will be an
important factor to understand labels easily and quickly, in their standard and
simple form.
