Abstract

Abstract

This research was conducted to examine the effect of having a pet on the psychological well-being of children. Since there was no study examining the effect of having a pet domestically on the psychological well-being of children when the literature was scanned, it was aimed to contribute to the literature with this study. The sample of the study was made up of children aged 9-12 years. The personal information form was used as data collection tool in the study and “Stirling Emotional and Psychological Well-Being Scale for Children” was used to measure children’s psychologicalwell-being. In the findings of the study, the difference between the psychological well-being scores of children who have pets and the psychological well-being scores of children who do not have pets was found to be significant Children who have pets have significantly higher psychological well-being scores. There was no significant difference in the psychological well-being scores of the children who own a pet, according to the duration of having a pet. It was found that the psychological well-being scores of children did not differ significantly according to gender, sibling status, birth order, parental education level, perceived income status and maternal employment status. In line with this result, it is thought that this positive effect of pets, which have an even more important place in the lives of our children especially after the pandemic, on the psychological well-being of children will also be important in preventing emotion and behavior problems in children.
