Maturidi mostly referred to Abu Awsaja
regarding philology issues in his exegesis named Ta’wilat al-Qur’an.
However, historical and scientific personality of Abu Awsaja remained anonymous
due to limited information about him. The texts transplanted from Abu Awsaja in
Ta’wilat al-Qur’an indicate
that he had a Quranic exegesis based on philology. In this paper, it was
tried to concretize the aforementioned historical identity and Quranic commentator personality of Abu Awsaja. Some determinations
were made concerning his life and related people and his exegesis method was
analyzed. It was clearly seen that Abu Awsaja concentrated on language reviews
while explaining the verses. He centered upon issues such as meanings and root
meanings of the readings in the Quran and pronunciation differences of
the Quran. Evaluating the present data; it is possible to state that Abu Awsaja
was a strong language and exegesis scholar in the third hijri century.
